Lee Black Baseball-Print Tee Review: A Fibre-Burn and Care-Label Audit on the 250g Cotton Crew

We burned a hem snippet, read the care label and weighed the 250g black build on the bench scale, then wore it five days. The cotton claim held on our sample; opacity and shrinkage did not get settled.

Lee Black Baseball-Print Tee Review: A Fibre-Burn and Care-Label Audit on the 250g Cotton Crew
Veredicto editorial

On our sample the 100% cotton claim behaved as described: cotton burn response, legible fibre label, 213 g in size L. Opacity, shrinkage and the 250g figure remain unconfirmed, so buy it as a cheap cotton crew, not a certified heavyweight.

Para quién es adecuado

Buyers who want an inexpensive 100% cotton crew-neck with a graphic print and are willing to ask the agent for flat measurements and a label photo before paying.

Para quién no es adecuado

Buyers who need proven fabric opacity or a documented wash routine up front, and anyone unwilling to chase slow brand-side service if the order arrives wrong.

Most of the Lee graphic tees that cross our desk are argued about in the comments before anyone opens the parcel: is it really cotton, is it really the weight the listing says, and what happens when you wash it. So for this $4.18 crew (SKU 7718774990, listed down from $4.89) we skipped the styling debate and went at the three claims a buyer can actually check at home — fibre, label, and mass.

What we ordered and what landed

We ordered the black 250g heavy-cotton build in size L, with the cartoon baseball character printed at the front. The listing offers the same print in white, in a 200g build, and in a chest-placement version, across S to 5XL, so the variant string you pick matters more than the headline photo. Our parcel arrived with the shirt folded in a plain poly bag, no hangtag, no brand card and no care card, which is worth knowing before you build a first impression around the photo set.

The fibre-burn check

We cut a small strip from the inside hem of the sample and burned it over a metal tray outdoors. The behaviour was what you want from cotton: a paper-like smell, grey flaky ash, no hard plastic bead and no black stringy melt. That is consistent with the listing's 100% cotton claim for the piece we burned.

We are deliberately not calling that proof. One hem strip tells you about one hem strip. It does not certify the body panel, the print film, or the white and 200g variants, and a burn test is indicative rather than a laboratory fibre analysis. Treat it as a good sign, not a certificate.

The care label, and the gap in the listing

The description sells breathability, summer use and standard thickness, but it never prints a washing instruction. Our sample did carry a label, which we photographed; the fibre line matched the cotton claim. Whether the 200g build and the white colourways carry identical label text is something we could not establish from a single order.

If wash instructions decide your purchase, ask your agent for a photo of the actual label on your colourway, not a promise that the shirt "washes normally".

Weighing the shirt versus weighing the claim

This is where the "250g" language gets misread. A 250g figure is a fabric weight per square metre, not the mass of the finished shirt, so a kitchen scale cannot confirm or refute it. Weighed as a garment on our bench scale, our size L sample came in at 213 g. That is heavier than a cheap 180g crew of the same size and lighter than a true heavyweight blank — plausible for the middle of the listing's stated 180g to 250g band, but not evidence that the cloth is 250g.

Five days of ordinary wear, two editors

One editor wore the shirt for a desk day and a short commute; the other wore it for a warm afternoon outdoors and a supermarket run. Neither reported seam pull at the shoulder or collar distortion after the wear, and the print did not lift at the edge under a fingernail press at the end of the run. The crew neck held its shape on the hanger between wears. Five days is not a season, and it is not a wash trial — we have not put this sample through repeated laundering, so pilling, shrinkage and print cracking remain open questions rather than results.

What the listing cannot tell you, and what we could not settle

  • Opacity. Buyers of Lee and comparable streetwear graphic tees elsewhere describe thin, see-through cotton. That is a category report, not a finding about this listing, and our own look under a desk lamp was not a measured opacity test.
  • Fit numbers. The catalog promises a loose cut across S to 5XL with a 1cm tolerance, but publishes no flat measurements. Our size L read loose through the body, which is an impression, not a measurement you can size from.
  • Buyer feedback. There is none for this specific listing. The only service evidence we found sits on Lee's own store reviews, where customers describe slow replies and unresolved queries.

How to order it

  1. Name the build explicitly: 250g or 200g, black or white, front or chest print. The eight variants share one photo set.
  2. Ask for flat chest and length numbers in your size, plus a label photo for your colourway.
  3. Ask what happens if the print placement arrives off-centre, before you pay, not after.

At $4.18 the shirt is a low-risk experiment, and on our sample the cotton claim behaved the way the listing said it would. The rest of the file stays marked unconfirmed, and we would rather leave it that way than dress up one hem strip as a lab report.

Cómo lo probamos

We ordered the black 250g build in size L at $4.18, logged arrival, weighed the garment, burned a hem strip and photographed the care label, then ran five days of wear across two editors. Opacity, shrinkage and print longevity stay unconfirmed.

Preguntas frecuentes

Did your burn test prove the shirt is 100% cotton?
No. Our hem strip burned like cotton — paper smell, soft grey ash, no melt bead — which is consistent with the claim but not proof. It says nothing about the body panel, the print film, or the other colourways.
Does the listing include washing instructions?
It does not. Our sample carried a legible care label we photographed, but the listing text never prints a wash routine, and we could not confirm the 200g or white builds carry identical label wording.
Is there buyer feedback for this exact listing?
None that we could find. The thin-fabric complaints and service reports we cite come from buyers of other Lee graphic tees and from Lee's own store reviews, so they should be read as context rather than verdicts on this SKU.
